Leading players in European software, services and telecommunications industry launch new IST technology platform Networked European Software and Services Initiative

On 7 September 2005 leading players of European software, services and telecommunications industry announced the launch of the new European technology platform NESSI, the Networked European Software and Services Initiative.

NESSI members expressed their committment to develop a visionary strategy for software and services, including a strategic research agenda to contribute to building the European knowledge-based economy and strengthen the European software and services industries' global position. NESSI's vision of 2020 foresees "wide adoption of services offered through networks and devices as a distributed system" with progress towards virtualisation.

The NESSI strategic research agenda will be based on the evolution of five key elements of aware computers, trust, ubiquity, alive software and user-centric engineering. NESSI describes a holistic approach, independent of application domains. The approach addresses three technology domain layers - infrastructure (software related, grid services, etc.), service integration and semantics - and cross-domain aspects of quality and reliability, security and trust, interoperability, and management services.

The 13 founding members of the initiative include Atos Origin, BT, Engineering, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Nokia, ObjectWeb, SAP, Siemens, Software AG, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, and Thales. The platform will be open to new members on the occassion of the first annual conference to be held in the fall of 2005.
